The Journey of Dehati Bazar – From Custom Software to Rural Treasures

The Journey of Dehati Bazar – From Custom Software to Rural Treasures

Our story began in 1998, not in the bustling markets of Rajasthan, but in the quiet hum of computers. As an IT company, we specialized in creating custom software for private businesses, designing solutions tailored to their needs. Over the years, our expertise expanded, and we developed numerous e-commerce portals for clients.

It was during one such project that a simple idea struck us — why not build our own e-commerce platform?

The First Step – But What to Sell?

With the portal ready, our next challenge was deciding what to sell. Like many first-time sellers, our minds went straight to readymade garments. Jaipur, Sanganer, and Bagru are known for their vibrant textile industry, and the market seemed full of opportunities. However, a deeper survey revealed that the space was already saturated.

We experimented with readymade garments and artificial jewellery for a while, sourcing products from West Bengal. While the business was good, it didn’t feel unique enough. We wanted something special — something deeply rooted in our culture.

Rediscovering Rajasthan’s Forgotten Vegetables

Being from Rajasthan, I knew about a traditional practice from earlier times: during dry spells, people preserved vegetables by drying them, ensuring food for the whole year. These were no ordinary vegetables — they had names, flavors, and recipes passed down for generations.

  • Fofalia – dried tinda, used year-round
  • Khelera – dried kakri, perfect for a tangy curry
  • Sangri, Kair, Kumath, Gwar Fali, Kachri – and many more

I identified around 11 such unique vegetables. We documented them, photographed them, and uploaded them to our new platform — Dehati Bazar. At first, the response was slow. But gradually, orders started coming in. People were delighted to find these rare, authentic Rajasthani products online.

The Birth of Dehati Bazar

We named our platform Dehati Bazar with a clear vision:

“To bring authentic products from Rajasthan’s villages (Dehat) directly to people across India and beyond, while empowering small farmers and rural artisans.”

We got the brand registered and began expanding our offerings.

From Vegetables to Vinegar

During our journey, we discovered a farm in Uttar Pradesh producing high-quality vinegar. Soon, we introduced vinegar made from jamun, olive, sugarcane, and apple. The response was positive, but we knew our portal needed an even broader product range.

Embracing Rajasthan’s Handicrafts

The next big step was tapping into Rajasthan’s rich handicraft heritage — a global favorite. From blue pottery and marble work to wooden carvings and resin art, we began sourcing directly from village artisans.

One of our favorite finds was the traditional Rajasthani safa (turban) — a symbol of honor in our culture. We met small artisans working from their homes, brimming with skill but lacking market access. We promised them that we would bring their creativity to a bigger audience.

Building a Team and a Dream

Orders began flowing in. Behind the scenes, our success was powered by teamwork:

  • A marketing team to reach new customers
  • A quality-check team to ensure authenticity and excellence
  • A procurement team to work closely with artisans and farmers

Our mission is ambitious — to grow Dehati Bazar into a ₹100 crore company and become a major exporter of rural products. And we’re just getting started.

The Road Ahead

The journey so far has been filled with learning, challenges, and countless stories from Rajasthan’s villages. In our next blog, I’ll share our future vision and how we plan to take Dehati Bazar to the world stage.

Dehati Bazar – Bringing Rajasthan’s Villages to Your Doorstep

From coding software to selling Rajasthan’s most authentic treasures — our journey has been anything but ordinary.

We started in 1998 as an IT company, building custom software and e-commerce portals for clients. One day, we decided to launch our own portal. But the big question was: What should we sell?

From Garments to Grandma’s Recipes

We first tried readymade garments and artificial jewellery — popular, but crowded markets. Then, inspiration came from our roots. In Rajasthan, people have a tradition of drying vegetables to last the whole year — delicacies like:

  • Fofalia (dried tinda)
  • Khelera (dried kakri)
  • Sangri, Kair, Kumath, Gwar Fali, and more

These were rare, traditional, and full of flavor. That’s how Dehati Bazar was born — a place to buy authentic Rajasthani dry vegetables online.

Expanding the Basket

Next came natural vinegars made from jamun, olive, sugarcane, and apple. Then we dove into Rajasthan’s most famous export — handicrafts.

From blue pottery and marble art to woodwork and resin craft, we sourced directly from village artisans. We even brought back the traditional Rajasthani safa (turban) — a timeless symbol of honor.

Our Mission

We’re more than just an online store. Dehati Bazar is about:

  • Empowering small farmers and artisans
  • Preserving Rajasthan’s culture
  • Delivering authentic village products to your home

Our goal? To grow into a ₹100 crore brand and take Rajasthan’s rural treasures to the global market.
